Illuminated is the adjective describing something that is lit or bright with light, whether from a physical source or by reflection. It can also be used metaphorically to denote something clarified or enlightened, such as an idea or understanding that has been made clearer or more perceptive.

In art history, illuminated manuscripts are the most well-known use of the term. These are handwritten books decorated with gold or silver, brilliant pigments, and elaborate marginalia. The practice developed in late antiquity and flourished in medieval Europe, with illuminators often working in monastic scriptoria. Techniques commonly included the application of gold leaf, vivid colors, and decorative initials that opened sections of text or conveyed iconography and narrative content.

Illumination draws on a variety of stylistic traditions, including Byzantine, Islamic, and Western European influences, leading to a diverse range of manuscript styles. Some of the most celebrated examples from the medieval period include the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels, which exemplify the combination of liturgical text, ornamental lettering, and miniature illustrations. In contemporary usage, illuminated can describe objects or spaces that emit light or reflect it in a notable way, such as architecture, signage, or artworks designed for nighttime visibility. The term can also denote the broader act of shedding light on a topic, thereby enhancing understanding or awareness. Illumination may appear in titles, product names, or media, where context clarifies its meaning.
