They are central to identity and access management (IAM). An identitetlagre typically contains user accounts, attributes, group memberships, and entitlement data, and may serve as the primary source of truth for identities in an organization.

Common forms include on-premises directory services like LDAP directories and Microsoft Active Directory, cloud-based identity stores such as Azure AD or Google Identity, and application- or database-backed stores.
