Ickekompensation refers to a psychological defense mechanism where an individual compensates for perceived weaknesses or inadequacies by emphasizing or developing strengths in other areas. The term originates from the Latin *compensare*, meaning "to make up for," and was popularized in psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud and later explored by Carl Jung and other psychologists. Unlike compensation, which involves balancing real or imagined deficits, ickekompensation implies a more exaggerated or overstated effort to mask perceived flaws, often leading to behaviors that may appear boastful or defensive.

This mechanism can manifest in various ways, such as intellectual, social, or physical achievements used to offset feelings of inferiority.
