IUPACinspired

IUPACinspired is an open‑source software library developed to automate the generation of systematic chemical names in accordance with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) guidelines. First released in 2020 by a collaborative team of computational chemists, the project was motivated by the growing need in academia and industry for consistent, machine‑readable chemical nomenclature. The library is distributed under the permissive MIT license and is available on GitHub, where it has attracted contributions from over 80 developers worldwide.

The core functionality of IUPACinspired is to accept chemical structures in SMILES, InChI, or file formats such as Molfile and generate the full IUPAC name, including stereochemistry, isotopic labeling, and tautomeric forms. It leverages the RDKit cheminformatics toolkit for structure handling while implementing a custom rule set that mirrors the latest IUPAC recommendations. The software supports batch processing and provides a RESTful API, enabling integration into laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and property prediction pipelines. Users can also export naming rules in JSON format for downstream validation workflows.

Since its inception, IUPACinspired has been cited in more than a dozen peer‑reviewed articles and is routinely used in chemistry education software to illustrate naming conventions. Its community maintains an extensive documentation site, tutorial videos, and a forum for troubleshooting, ensuring that both novice and experienced chemists can make efficient use of the tool. Future development plans include support for organometallic nomenclature and enhanced compliance with the IUPAC Subcommittee on the New System for Oxidation States.
