The term is commonly used in Scandinavian languages as IT-kostnader and in English as IT costs. It includes both capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx). Major components are hardware (servers, workstations, networking equipment), software (licenses, subscriptions, maintenance), cloud services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), IT services (consulting, support, managed services), personnel (developers, system administrators, helpdesk), and facilities and energy (data center power and cooling). Depreciation and amortization of assets and the costs of disposal also enter ITkostnader.

Cost analysis often uses the total cost of ownership (TCO) and may involve cost allocation to business units, departments, or projects. Models distinguish CapEx-heavy investments from OpEx-driven ongoing expenses, with cloud adoption typically shifting to OpEx. Effective management requires cost visibility, budgeting, and governance, including chargeback or showback mechanisms, vendor negotiations, and lifecycle management to retire or re purpose assets. Optimization strategies include right-sizing of cloud resources, standardization of technologies, automation, outsourcing where appropriate, and adopting open-source software when feasible. Risks include cost overruns, security, and compliance requirements.
