The term is commonly used in Norway and other Scandinavian countries and encompasses any hardware that terminates a B‑channel or D‑channel connection at the subscriber site. Typical examples include ISDN phones, fax machines, modems, walk‑in terminals for customer service, IP‑based gateways, and network routers that have a built‑in ISDN interface.

The primary function of ISDNterminalutstyr is to convert the digital signal delivered by the service provider into a form that can be understood by the user’s application. This may involve translating the common channel signaling used by ISDN (CIS) into the control signals of a telephone or fax system. Modern gateways also perform packet‑to‑packet conversion, enabling voice and data to be carried simultaneously over the same physical link.

ISDN terminal equipment is specified by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU‑T) in standards such as B RI, B RI plus, and E‐1. Devices must support the Digipeer protocol layers: the physical layer (E‑1 or T1), the link layer (BCH), and the service layer (G.703 or G.704). Compatibility with the local ISDN provider’s switching system (e.g., PSTN or NGN) is mandatory.

Using dedicated ISDN terminal equipment gives several advantages: lower latency than internet‑based voice services, guaranteed bandwidth, and support for specialized services such as call forwarding, caller identification, and integrated data‑voice applications. Because the ISDN channel is digital, the equipment can also provide better protection against noise and signal degradation compared to analog lines.

Many businesses still rely on ISDN terminal equipment for corporate telephony, especially in environments that require high quality voice, reliable fax transmission, or integration with legacy PBX systems. As IP‑based VoIP solutions become more widespread, the role of ISDNterminalutstyr is decreasing, but it remains an important component of the telecommunications infrastructure for sectors that demand proven reliability and standardised interconnection.
