IQOS

IQOS is a brand of heat-not-burn tobacco products developed by Philip Morris International (PMI). The system heats processed tobacco contained in a stick—sold as HEETS or HeatSticks—instead of burning it, producing an inhalable aerosol. The hardware typically includes a rechargeable holder and a charger; users insert a tobacco stick into the holder and activate heating.

Technology and operation: The device heats tobacco to a temperature sufficient to release nicotine-containing aerosol but below combustion, commonly around 350°C. The aerosol contains nicotine, water vapor, flavorings, and tobacco-derived constituents. Because there is no combustion, IQOS generally exposes users to lower levels of some harmful chemicals than cigarette smoke, though it is not risk-free.

Regulatory status: IQOS is sold in many countries and regulated as a tobacco product. Regulatory status and permitted health claims vary by jurisdiction. In some markets regulators allow reduced-exposure marketing claims, while health authorities stress that the product is not risk-free and nicotine addiction remains a concern.

Health research: Evidence on health effects is evolving. Some studies show reduced exposure to certain toxicants relative to cigarettes when switching to IQOS, but long-term health outcomes are unknown and independent analyses emphasize continued caution for users and non-users who may be exposed to aerosol.

Usage and components: The product line includes the device (holder) and charging accessories and tobacco sticks (HEETS/HeatSticks). IQOS markets itself as an alternative for current smokers who wish to avoid combustion; it is not intended for non-smokers or youth.
