IPCodes

IP codes, short for Ingress Protection codes, are a standardized system used to describe how well an electrical enclosure protects its contents from intrusion by solid objects and liquids. The system, defined by IEC 60529, is widely used in consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and outdoor installations to convey a product’s level of protection at a glance.

An IP code consists of two digits. The first digit indicates protection against solids, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust-tight). The second digit indicates protection against liquids, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 8 (continuous immersion under defined conditions). Common examples include IP54 (dust-protected and protected against water splashes from any direction), IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets), IP67 (dust-tight and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes), and IP68 (dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion under specified conditions). In practice, higher digits generally imply greater protection, but the exact test conditions are specified in the standard for each rating.

In some contexts, additional markings such as IP69K are used. IP69K denotes protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets and is often described as a combination of dust-tight protection with a more stringent liquid ingress standard, commonly used in automotive and washdown-heavy environments. The 9K designation is defined in related standards to reflect these specialized tests.

Notes on use and limitations: the IP rating applies to the enclosure and is based on standardized testing under controlled conditions. It does not guarantee protection against all hazards, nor does it reflect performance of the device’s seals under real-world wear, temperature cycling, or chemical exposure. Proper installation and maintenance remain essential to achieve the rated protection.
