Hólánc

Hólánc is a Hungarian term that translates to "snow chain" in English. It refers to a device made of metal links that is fitted around the tires of a vehicle to provide additional traction on snow and ice. Hólánc are typically used during winter months when road conditions become hazardous due to frozen precipitation.

The primary purpose of hólánc is to increase the friction between the tires and the road surface. The metal links dig into the snow and ice, creating grip that would otherwise be impossible with regular tires. This improved traction is crucial for preventing skidding, allowing for better acceleration, braking, and steering control in adverse weather.

Hólánc are usually sold in sets, with one set intended for the drive wheels of the vehicle. Installation can be a challenging process, often requiring the vehicle to be moved or jacked up. Once fitted, it is generally recommended to drive at a reduced speed, as hólánc can affect the vehicle's handling and comfort.
