Håndcarders

Håndcarders are traditional tools used for processing wool and other fibers, primarily employed in hand-spinning and textile crafts. Typically made from wood, metal, or a combination of both, håndcarders consist of two rectangular or oval paddles fitted with rows of closely spaced, sharp-edged teeth or wires. These teeth facilitate the alignment and cleaning of fibers, making them easier to spin or weave.

The primary purpose of håndcarders is to card fibers, a process that detangles, cleans, and arranges fiber staples into a more manageable and uniform form known as a batt or rolled into individual rovings. Carding with håndcarders is a manual alternative to drum carders and is favored by hand-spinners, fiber artists, and craft enthusiasts for its tactile control over the fiber preparation process.

Håndcarders are usually sold in pairs, allowing users to draw fibers back and forth between the paddles. The angle and density of the teeth can vary, influencing how much fiber is removed or manipulated during use. They are often used in fiber preparation for spinning yarn, felting, or other textile arts that require evenly aligned fibers.
