A handspinner is a tool used to spin fibers into yarn or thread. Historically, handspinners were crucial for producing textiles for clothing, household goods, and trade. The most common form of handspinner is the drop spindle, which consists of a whorl (a weight) and a spindle shaft. Fibers are drawn out from a prepared mass, such as a cloud of wool or flax, and twisted by the rotation of the spindle, which is often dropped or thrown to create momentum. The twist is then incorporated into the fiber, forming a yarn.

As the yarn is spun, it is wound onto the spindle shaft. Other types of handspinners include the spinning wheel, which uses a foot pedal or hand crank to drive a flyer mechanism that spins and winds the yarn simultaneously, allowing for faster and more efficient yarn production.
