Hämokritvärde

Hämokritvärde, also known as hematocrit, is a blood test measurement that indicates the proportion of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the total blood volume. It is expressed as a percentage and is an important parameter in diagnosing and monitoring various medical conditions related to blood volume and oxygen-carrying capacity.

The hematocrit value is determined by centrifuging a blood sample, which separates the blood components based on density. The percentage of the blood volume occupied by red blood cells is then calculated. Normal ranges typically vary between genders and laboratories but generally fall within 40-50% for men and 36-44% for women.

A low hematocrit value can indicate anemia, blood loss, or overhydration. Conversely, a high value may suggest dehydration, polycythemia vera, or other conditions resulting in increased red blood cell production. It can also be influenced by factors such as altitude, physical activity, and certain medical treatments.

Hematocrit measurement is commonly included in complete blood counts (CBC) and is a useful indicator of the blood's ability to transport oxygen. It must be interpreted alongside other hematological parameters, such as hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell count, to provide a comprehensive assessment of a patient's health status.

Because hematocrit levels can fluctuate due to physiological and pathological factors, repeated testing may be necessary for accurate diagnosis and management. Overall, it serves as a valuable tool in diagnosing anemia, polycythemia, and other hematological disorders.
