Häivyttimillä, also known as dimmers, are devices used to control the intensity of light. They work by varying the voltage or current supplied to a light source. This variation can be achieved through several methods, including phase control, pulse-width modulation (PWM), or electronic dimming.

Phase control dimmers are common for incandescent and halogen bulbs. They work by chopping off a portion of the AC waveform, reducing the effective voltage supplied to the bulb. This results in a dimmer light output. PWM dimming is often used for LED lights, where it rapidly turns the light on and off. The speed of this on/off cycling is so fast that the human eye perceives a change in brightness rather than individual flashes.

Electronic dimmers can be more complex and offer greater precision. They often use solid-state components like transistors or thyristors to regulate power. Modern dimmers can be controlled manually via a knob or slider, or electronically through systems like DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) or 0-10V interfaces. These electronic controls allow for more sophisticated lighting scenes and automation.

The choice of dimmer depends on the type of light source being used. Not all dimmers are compatible with all types of bulbs. For example, trying to dim an LED bulb with a dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs can lead to flickering, damage, or complete failure of the bulb or dimmer. Compatibility is crucial for proper function and longevity.
