Hypodermins

Hypodermins are a proposed class of biomolecules associated with the hypodermis, the subcutaneous layer of vertebrate skin. They are hypothesized to mediate interactions among adipocytes, fibroblasts, immune cells, and the dermal layer, potentially influencing tissue remodeling, metabolism, and signaling within the skin.

The term hypodermin does not have a widely accepted definition in peer‑reviewed literature. It appears in limited speculative discussions and some teaching sources, with varying descriptions of whether hypodermins are peptides, lipids, or other molecular entities. As a concept, it often overlaps with known factors such as adipokines and skin-derived signaling molecules, but there is no consensus on formal criteria or classification.

If they exist, hypodermins would likely be produced by cells in the hypodermis, including adipocytes and resident fibroblasts, and could be released into interstitial spaces or circulation.
