Hyperpolarisierung refers to a state of extreme polarization within a population or political system. It signifies a deep division where opposing groups hold increasingly entrenched and mutually exclusive viewpoints, making compromise and consensus exceptionally difficult. This phenomenon is characterized by a widening gap in beliefs, values, and perceptions of reality between different factions.

In a hyperpolarized environment, individuals may exhibit strong in-group favoritism and out-group hostility. Information is often filtered through partisan lenses, leading to the reinforcement of existing biases and a diminished capacity for understanding opposing perspectives. Social and political discourse can become more acrimonious, with increased distrust and animosity between groups.

The causes of hyperpolarisierung are multifaceted, often involving a combination of factors such as economic inequality, demographic shifts, the influence of social media algorithms that promote echo chambers, and the actions of political elites who may strategically exploit divisions for electoral gain.
