Hyperflexible

Hyperflexible refers to a condition where an individual possesses an unusually large range of motion in their joints. This condition is often associated with hypermobility, which is the ability of joints to move beyond the normal range. While some degree of hypermobility can be advantageous in certain activities, such as gymnastics or ballet, excessive hyperflexibility can lead to a variety of issues.

Individuals who are hyperflexible may experience frequent joint pain, dislocations, and an increased risk of injuries like sprains and strains. The ligaments and connective tissues that stabilize the joints are often looser, making them more susceptible to damage. In some cases, hyperflexibility can be a symptom of an underlying connective tissue disorder, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome.

Diagnosis of hyperflexibility is typically made through a physical examination, often using the Beighton score, which assesses the mobility of specific joints. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing further injury. This often involves physical therapy to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints, improve proprioception (the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body), and develop strategies to protect the joints during daily activities and exercise. While hyperflexibility itself cannot be "cured," appropriate management can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the incidence of pain and injury.
