Hvorki

The hvorki are a fictional semi-aquatic mammal species created for speculative biology and worldbuilding. In most treatments they inhabit the swamp forests of Verdara, a temperate planet in the hypothetical Lethian system, where slow-moving rivers and marshes provide abundant cover and food.

Physically, hvorki are 40 to 60 cm in body length, with a 10 to 20 cm tail and a weight of 4 to 8 kg. They have water-repellent fur, partly webbed hind feet, and a broad, fin-like tail used for propulsion. A notable feature is the pair of bioluminescent membranes along the face and limbs, which emit soft light in dusky waters and serve in social signaling.

Ecology and behavior: Hvorki are omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, invertebrates, and small prey caught during foraging dives. They live in kin-based groups, often called pods or clans, that cooperate in foraging, defense, and brood care. Vocalizations and light displays complement scent and touch in communication.

Reproduction and lifecycle: Breeding typically occurs during the rainy season. Gestation lasts approximately two to three months, commonly yielding litters of one to three offspring. Pups are altricial and depend on parental care for several months; sexual maturity arrives around one and a half to two years.

Conservation and cultural presence: In fictional settings, hvorki are depicted as indicators of healthy wetland ecosystems. They appear in worldbuilding guides, novels, and games, where their social behavior and bioluminescent displays are favored motifs.
