Verdara

Verdara is a sovereign city-state and regional hub on the western coast of the continent of Asterra. It lies at the mouth of the Verdara River, where canals and tidal channels weave between stone districts and wooden markets. The city covers several districts arranged around a central waterfront, with hills to the east and marshlands to the south.

Verdara's history traces to merchant guilds who established fortified trading posts in the 9th century. It grew as a commercial and cultural crossroads, surviving sieges and reforming governance after the Verdari War of the early 13th century. In the modern era, Verdara maintains a degree of autonomy within a loose federation of coastal city-states.

A Council of Guild Representatives guides policy, while an elected mayor chairs the city administration and a High Auditor oversees spending and anticorruption measures. Citizens who complete a civic service are eligible to participate in elections.

The economy centers on the port, shipbuilding, finance, textiles, and craft markets. The canal network supports internal transport, supplemented by ferries and a light rail link to nearby towns. Verdara is also a center for scholarship and artisanship.

Culturally, Verdara is known for its diverse communities and architectural styles that blend stone and timber. The annual Harvest Tide festival celebrates fishing, trade, and music. The Library of Lapis and the Glass Basin, a public plaza framed by arcades, are notable sites.

Education and science are advanced for a city of its size, led by Verdara University, with faculties in maritime studies, law, philosophy, and natural sciences. The city maintains partnerships with neighboring regions.
