Humusakkumulation refers to the process by which organic matter accumulates in the soil. This organic matter, known as humus, is formed from the decomposition of plant and animal residues by microorganisms. Humus is a dark, rich, and complex substance that plays a crucial role in soil health and fertility.

The accumulation of humus is influenced by several factors, including the rate of organic matter input, the rate of decomposition, climate, and soil type. In environments with high plant productivity and moderate temperatures and moisture, the rate of organic matter input typically exceeds the rate of decomposition, leading to significant humus accumulation. Conversely, in arid or very cold climates, decomposition is slow, which can also result in substantial organic matter buildup, although the composition of the humus may differ.
