Hullbuilding refers to the process of constructing the hull of a watercraft, which is the watertight body of a ship, boat, or other vessel. This is a fundamental aspect of naval architecture and shipbuilding, as the hull provides buoyancy, stability, and structural integrity. The methods and materials used in hullbuilding vary significantly depending on the size, type, and intended use of the vessel.

Historically, hulls were primarily constructed from wood. This involved shaping timbers and joining them together to form the vessel's shape. Modern hull construction often employs steel, aluminum, or fiberglass. Steel is commonly used for large ships due to its strength and durability. Aluminum offers a lighter alternative, suitable for faster vessels. Fiberglass, a composite material, is prevalent in recreational boat building for its corrosion resistance and ease of molding.

The construction process typically begins with the keel, the backbone of the vessel. Ribs or frames are then attached to the keel, forming the skeleton. Planking or plating is then applied to these frames to create the watertight shell. Modern techniques often involve welding steel plates or laying up fiberglass layers. The internal structure, including bulkheads and decks, is also incorporated during hullbuilding to provide compartmentalization and support.
