Hudfriktion

Hudfriktion is the frictional interaction between the skin and an opposing surface. It is a biomechanical phenomenon that arises from tangential forces at the skin–surface interface. The friction force, Ff, is typically modeled as Ff = μN, where μ is the coefficient of friction between the skin and the surface and N is the normal force pressing the surfaces together. Dynamic friction can differ from static friction, and micro- and macro-slips may occur during movement.

Several factors influence hudfriktion, including the condition of the skin (hydration, oiliness, integrity), surface roughness, temperature and humidity, the speed and duration of sliding, and the presence of hair or clothing fibers. Lubricants or moisture on the skin can also change the effective friction.

Excessive or repetitive skin friction can irritate the skin and cause chafing, dermatitis, blisters, or abrasions. In medical contexts, friction interacts with pressure and shear to affect wound development and healing. In daily life and sports, hudfriktion contributes to comfort or risk of skin injury depending on clothing, equipment, and activity.

Measurement and research on hudfriktion fall under the field of tribology applied to biological systems. Researchers use laboratory devices and skin simulants to estimate the coefficient of friction and assess the impact of moisture, temperature, and surface materials on skin sliding.

Prevention and management focus on reducing friction or protecting the skin. Approaches include lubricants or barrier creams, smooth and breathable fabrics or surfaces, proper garment fit, moisture control, and appropriate wound care to minimize ongoing friction during healing. Applications extend to clothing and footwear design, bedding, and medical dressings.
