Holzleimen, also known as wood gluing, is the process of joining pieces of wood together using an adhesive. This technique is fundamental in woodworking and is employed in a wide range of applications, from furniture construction and cabinetry to instrument making and structural timber framing. The success of wood gluing relies on several factors, including the type of adhesive used, the preparation of the wood surfaces, and the application of adequate clamping pressure.

Various types of wood glues exist, each with its own properties and best-use scenarios. Common adhesives include polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glues, which are water-based and widely used for general woodworking due to their ease of use and relatively quick drying times. Epoxy resins offer very strong and durable bonds, often used for structural applications or when filling gaps. Polyurethane glues are known for their waterproof properties and ability to expand slightly, making them suitable for outdoor projects. Hide glue, derived from animal collagen, is a traditional adhesive valued for its reversibility, which is useful in antique restoration.

Proper surface preparation is crucial for achieving a strong wood joint. This typically involves ensuring the wood surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or old finishes. A tight fit between the joining pieces is also essential, as most wood glues create a bond with the wood fibers themselves rather than filling large gaps effectively. Once the glue is applied, clamping the pieces together with sufficient pressure for the recommended curing time is vital to ensure maximum contact and a strong bond.
