Hochstuhl

Hochstuhl, known in Slovenian as Stol, is a mountain in the Karawanks range of the Southern Limestone Alps, located on the border between Austria and Slovenia. The summit reaches about 2,236 meters above sea level. The north flank lies in the Austrian state of Carinthia, while the south face descends into Slovenian territory; the peak forms part of the main crest of the Karawanks.

Geography and geology: The mountain is primarily composed of limestone and dolomite, with rugged rock faces and alpine meadows on the higher slopes. Its position on the border makes it a conspicuous landmark in the range.

Access and routes: There are several marked routes to the summit from both sides. Austrian approaches typically begin in valleys north of the ridge and involve steep ascents through meadows and scree; Slovenian routes approach from the south through forested valleys. Hikes are generally considered strenuous and are best undertaken in good weather; winter ascents require winter climbing experience and equipment.

Nature and views: The Hochstuhl area hosts typical alpine flora and fauna, including edelweiss, alpine grasses, chamois, and marmots. The summit offers expansive views of the surrounding Alps and, on clear days, views into both Austria and Slovenia.

Name and border significance: Hochstuhl translates to “high chair” in German, while Stol is the Slovenian equivalent; the names refer to the same peak. The mountain has long marked the Austro-Slovene border and remains a recognizable boundary feature along the Karawanks.
