edelweiss

Edelweiss, or Leontopodium alpinum, is a perennial flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, native to the European Alps. The name Edelweiss comes from German, meaning noble white.

It grows in high-altitude habitats such as rocky meadows and limestone crevices at elevations roughly 1,800 to 3,000 meters. The plant forms a low rosette of hairy leaves, with flowering stems bearing woolly white, star-shaped flowers that have a small yellow center. Blooming typically occurs from June to August.

Edelweiss is adapted to harsh alpine conditions and is primarily pollinated by insects. The white hairs on the flower heads and leaves help reduce heat loss and protect tissues from strong UV radiation. Seed dispersal occurs by wind.

Culturally, Edelweiss has been used as a symbol of the Alps and is associated with national identity in parts of Europe, notably Austria and Switzerland. It has appeared in folk songs and in popular media, such as the song Edelweiss from The Sound of Music. Wild collection is restricted in many places to protect native populations.

In horticulture, Edelweiss is grown as an ornamental plant in alpine gardens and rock gardens. It is typically propagated by seed or division and requires well-drained soil, cool summers, and plenty of sun.
