Hochprägung

Hochprägung is a German term that translates to "high embossing" or "deep impression" and is most commonly associated with the field of graphic arts and printing, specifically in the context of intaglio printing processes. It refers to a technique where the inked image is raised significantly from the surface of the paper, creating a tactile and three-dimensional effect. This is achieved by engraving a plate with a deep recess, which is then filled with ink. When paper is pressed against this plate under high pressure, the ink is transferred, and the paper itself is forced into the engraved channels, producing the characteristic raised impression.

The hallmark of Hochprägung is the depth of the relief. Unlike standard embossing or letterpress, which might offer a slight texture, Hochprägung results in a noticeable raised design that can be felt by touch. This technique is often employed for high-quality printing applications where a luxurious and substantial feel is desired, such as in security printing for banknotes and official documents, fine art prints, and prestigious stationery.
