Hitsausvalo

Hitsausvalo refers to the intense light produced during welding processes. This light is a byproduct of the high temperatures and energy involved in melting and joining metal pieces. The spectrum of hitsausvalo includes visible light, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and infrared (IR) radiation.

The visible light component is the most obvious, appearing as a bright arc or flame. The intensity of this light can be thousands of times brighter than direct sunlight, making it dangerous to look at directly without proper eye protection. UV radiation is also a significant concern, as overexposure can cause photokeratitis, commonly known as "welder's flash," which is a painful inflammation of the cornea. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can also contribute to cataracts and skin damage. IR radiation, while not as immediately damaging to the eyes as UV, can cause heat discomfort and contribute to eye strain.

To protect welders and bystanders, specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. Welding helmets and hand shields are equipped with tinted lenses, often referred to as "shades," that filter out harmful levels of UV and IR radiation while allowing enough visible light to see the weld pool. The appropriate shade number depends on the welding process and amperage. Good ventilation is also important to remove welding fumes, which are often generated alongside the light.
