Hipotézisvizsgálatnak, commonly referred to as hypothesis testing, is a fundamental statistical method used to make decisions about populations based on sample data. The core idea is to formulate a hypothesis about a population parameter and then use sample evidence to determine if that hypothesis is likely true or false. This process is crucial in various fields, including science, engineering, and business, for drawing reliable conclusions.

The procedure typically begins with defining two competing hypotheses: the null hypothesis (H0) and the alternative hypothesis (H1). The null hypothesis represents the status quo or a statement of no effect, while the alternative hypothesis proposes that there is an effect or a difference. Data is then collected from a sample, and a test statistic is calculated. This statistic measures how far the sample data deviates from what would be expected under the null hypothesis.

Next, a p-value is determined. The p-value is the probability of observing sample data as extreme as, or more extreme than, the observed data, assuming the null hypothesis is true. A small p-value (typically below a predetermined significance level, denoted by alpha, often 0.05) suggests that the observed data is unlikely under the null hypothesis, leading to its rejection in favor of the alternative hypothesis. Conversely, a large p-value indicates that the null hypothesis cannot be rejected.

The outcome of hypothesis testing is a decision: either reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject it. It's important to note that failing to reject the null hypothesis does not prove it is true, only that there isn't enough evidence in the sample to conclude otherwise. This systematic approach allows researchers to quantify the uncertainty associated with their conclusions and to make evidence-based decisions.
