Himmelmekanikk, or celestial mechanics, is the branch of astronomy that applies principles of classical mechanics to the motions of natural bodies such as stars, planets, moons, comets, and asteroids. The field combines physics, mathematics, and observational astronomy to explain and predict the gravitational interactions between these celestial objects. Its foundations were laid by pioneers like Johannes Kepler, who formulated his three laws of planetary motion in the early 17th century, and Sir Isaac Newton, who later provided the theoretical framework through his law of universal gravitation.

Celestial mechanics seeks to describe how objects move under the influence of gravity, often considering systems with two or more bodies. Two-body problems, such as the orbit of a planet around the Sun, can be solved analytically using Newtonian mechanics. However, most real-world systems involve three or more bodies, making exact solutions difficult or impossible to derive mathematically. In such cases, numerical methods and approximations, like perturbation theory, are employed to model the behavior over time.
