Herstelcafés

Herstelcafés are informal community spaces designed to support people living with mental health challenges or addiction in their recovery process. They are typically low-threshold and peer-led, offering a safe, non-judgmental environment where attendees can talk about their experiences, share coping strategies, and access information about treatment and social services. Activities may include discussions, casual conversations over coffee or tea, peer-to-peer support, and social or creative activities.

Originating in the Netherlands in the early 2000s as part of the broader recovery movement, herstelcafés emerged from the idea that recovery is fostered through social connection and empowerment rather than solely clinical treatment. The concept has since spread to other European countries and beyond, often adapted to local contexts and resources.

Most herstelcafés are organized by user groups, mental health organizations, municipalities, or community centers. They aim to reduce isolation, decrease stigma, and help individuals navigate care options, housing, benefits, and employment. Attendance is typically open to anyone who wishes to discuss recovery, with emphasis on voluntary participation and confidentiality.

Critically, herstelcafés operate alongside health services rather than replacing them; staff may provide information or referrals, but the atmosphere remains informal. Challenges can include ensuring consistent quality, safeguarding privacy, and securing sustainable funding or coordination with professional care.
