Heraldryidentifying is the practice of identifying and interpreting heraldic devices, coats of arms, and related insignia as they appear on artifacts, seals, manuscripts, buildings, or modern logos. It sits at the intersection of heraldry, genealogy, art history, and archival research.

Practitioners seek to determine who bears the arms, when they were granted or inherited, and what the figures and symbols signify. The work often involves authentication, provenance research, and cross-checking multiple sources to establish a credible identification.

Core concepts include blazon (the formal description of a coat of arms), tinctures, charges, ordinaries, divisions, supporters, crests, and mottoes. Common metals and colours — or, argent; gules, azure, vert, sable — influence both design and interpretation.

Heraldic authorities maintain official registers and grant arms. In Britain, for example, the College of Arms; in Scotland, the Court of the Lord Lyon; various countries maintain similar offices. Armorial rolls, grants, visitations, and records provide essential reference material.

Methods include descriptive analysis, blazon translation into modern imagery, comparison with established armorials, and verification with registries. Provenance documentation, photograph annotation, and clear notes on uncertainty are standard practices.

Challenges include identical or similar arms across families, alterations over time, modern imitations, and language barriers. Ethical practice emphasizes accuracy, attribution, and respect for living bearers and cultural heritage when labeling or presenting heraldic identifications.
