Hengiskraut

Hengiskraut, also known as *Henshenkraut* or *Henshenkraut* in some regional dialects, is a traditional herbal remedy primarily associated with German and Austrian folk medicine. The term "Hengiskraut" itself is not widely recognized in modern botanical literature, but it may refer to plants used historically for similar purposes, such as *Henshenkraut* (a colloquial name for *Petasites hybridus*, commonly known as butterbur). Butterbur is a perennial plant belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae), native to Europe and parts of Asia.

Butterbur has been used for centuries in herbal medicine, particularly for its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. It was traditionally employed to treat respiratory conditions such as coughs, bronchitis, and asthma. The plant’s rhizomes (underground stems) were often dried and prepared as teas or tinctures. Additionally, butterbur was sometimes applied topically for skin irritations or as a poultice for joint pain.

In modern herbalism, butterbur is primarily recognized for its potential benefits in relieving allergy symptoms, though research remains limited. It contains compounds like petasin and isopetasin, which may help reduce inflammation and mucus production. However, due to concerns about pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) found in some varieties, caution is advised, particularly with long-term use or improperly processed forms. Modern preparations often use PA-free extracts to mitigate these risks.

While hengiskraut itself is not a standardized term in contemporary herbalism, its historical usage aligns with the properties of butterbur.
