Heißwasserwäsche, also known as hot water washing, refers to the process of cleaning laundry using water heated to higher temperatures. Typically, this means water temperatures of 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) or above. This method is primarily employed for items that require thorough disinfection and the removal of stubborn stains or bacteria.

The effectiveness of hot water washing lies in its ability to kill microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and dust mites. High temperatures denature proteins, rendering these pathogens inactive and making it an effective sanitization technique, especially for bedding, towels, and underwear. Furthermore, hot water can significantly improve the removal of grease, oil-based stains, and certain types of dirt that are more soluble in warmer conditions.

However, hot water washing is not suitable for all fabrics. Many delicate materials, such as wool, silk, and certain synthetics, can be damaged by high temperatures, leading to shrinkage, warping, or color fading. Therefore, it is crucial to check fabric care labels before selecting a hot wash cycle. The energy consumption associated with heating water to high temperatures also makes it a less environmentally friendly option compared to cold water washing. Modern detergents are often formulated to work effectively at lower temperatures, reducing the necessity for hot water for general cleaning.
