Heilablóðfall

Heilablóðfall, also known as a stroke, is a medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die within minutes.

There are two main types of stroke: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke, the most common type, happens when a blood clot blocks an artery carrying blood to the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the surrounding brain tissue.

Symptoms of a stroke can appear suddenly and may include numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion; trouble speaking or understanding speech; vision problems in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance; and a severe headache with no known cause. It is crucial to recognize these signs and seek immediate medical attention, as prompt treatment can significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, heart disease, and a family history of stroke. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and not smoking can help reduce the risk.
