Hedelmäkärpäs

Hedelmäkärpäs, scientifically known as Drosophila melanogaster, is a small, common fly belonging to the family Drosophilidae. These flies are widely distributed across the globe and are often found in proximity to fruits and vegetables, particularly those that are ripening or fermenting. Their lifecycle is relatively short, typically lasting a few weeks, and they reproduce rapidly under favorable conditions.

Adult fruit flies are tiny, usually only a few millimeters in length, and are often characterized by their reddish-brown eyes and yellowish-brown bodies. Their presence in homes is often associated with kitchens, where they are attracted to sweet, decaying organic matter. Common sources include fruit bowls, garbage disposals, and spilled sugary drinks.

Due to their rapid reproduction and easily observable genetic traits, fruit flies have become invaluable model organisms in scientific research, particularly in genetics and developmental biology. Their simple genetic makeup and short generation time allow scientists to study inheritance patterns and biological processes efficiently. While generally considered a nuisance in domestic settings, their scientific importance is significant. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans.
