Hashtabeller

Hashtabeller are data structures that store associations between keys and values. They rely on a hash function to map each key to an index in an array of slots, called buckets. A well-chosen hash function distributes keys evenly, minimizing collisions. Insertion, lookup, and deletion typically operate in near-constant time on average, making hashtabeller a common choice for associative arrays in many programming environments.

To insert a key-value pair, the system computes hash(key) and uses the result to identify a bucket. If the bucket is empty, the pair is stored there. If the bucket already holds a pair with the same key, the value is updated. If a collision occurs (different keys map to the same bucket), the structure uses a collision-resolution strategy, most commonly separate chaining (storing multiple entries in a linked list or dynamic array at the bucket) or open addressing (probing for another slot according to a rule).

Open addressing strategies include linear probing, quadratic probing, and double hashing. These schemes keep all entries within the table, which can improve cache locality but require careful handling of deletions and tombstones to avoid breaking lookups.

To maintain performance, a hashtabeller resizes when the load factor reaches a threshold; the table expands and existing entries are rehashed into new buckets. This reduces collisions but incurs a cost during resizing.

Variants and design choices include separate chaining and open addressing, with techniques such as robin hood hashing and cuckoo hashing in some implementations. Complexity is typically described as O(1) average time for lookups and updates, with worst-case O(n) in adversarial scenarios or poor hash quality. Real-world use spans dictionaries, maps, caches, and language runtimes, where hash quality, key types, and memory behavior influence performance.
