HarvardKyoto

HarvardKyoto, formally known as the Harvard-Kyoto Initiative (HKI), is a collaborative partnership between Harvard University and the City of Kyoto, Japan, established in 2015. The initiative was created to foster academic, cultural, and research exchanges between the United States and Japan, with a particular emphasis on areas such as environmental science, digital humanities, and traditional arts. HKI operates through joint programs hosted at Harvard's campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at partner institutions in Kyoto, including Kyoto University and the Kyoto International Center for Culture and Arts.

The program offers a range of activities, including joint degree and certificate programs for graduate students, faculty‑to‑faculty research projects, and short‑term visiting scholar appointments. In addition, HKI sponsors annual conferences and symposia that bring together scholars from both sides of the Pacific to discuss emerging topics in sustainability, urban planning, and cross‑cultural communication. A notable project under HKI is the Greening Kyoto Digital Archive, a collaborative effort to digitize and analyze historical maps and environmental data related to Kyoto’s urban development.

Governance of HKI is shared between Harvard’s Center for Japanese Studies and the Kyoto Prefectural Government, with operating funds derived from a mix of institutional support, research grants, and philanthropy. By facilitating interdisciplinary research and exchange, HarvardKyoto has contributed to a deeper understanding of Japan’s cultural heritage and contemporary societal issues, while providing students and faculty with unique international experiences. The initiative continues to expand its network, aiming to strengthen East‑West academic ties and promote sustainable development solutions across the globe.
