Hartialevyydyydestä, known in English as clavicular fracture or collarbone break, is a common bone fracture occurring in the clavicle, the long bone that connects the shoulder blade to the sternum. This type of fracture is most frequently caused by direct trauma to the shoulder, such as a fall onto the shoulder or an outstretched arm. High-impact sports, accidents, and falls, particularly in children and young adults, are common scenarios leading to this injury.

Symptoms typically include immediate and severe pain at the fracture site, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Often, the person will hold their arm close to their body and support it with their other hand to minimize movement and pain. A visible deformity, such as a lump or bump over the collarbone, may also be present. In some cases, the broken bone ends may pierce the skin, constituting an open fracture.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and confirmed with X-rays. Treatment depends on the severity and location of the fracture. Many clavicular fractures are treated non-surgically with a sling to immobilize the arm and allow the bone to heal. Pain management with over-the-counter or prescription medications is also common. Healing typically takes several weeks to a few months. More complex or displaced fractures may require surgical intervention, involving plates, screws, or rods to stabilize the bone fragments. Rehabilitation exercises are important to restore shoulder strength and range of motion after the initial healing period.
