Happiryhmät, also known as hydroxyl groups or alcohol functional groups, are a fundamental chemical moiety characterized by an oxygen atom bonded to a hydrogen atom (-OH). This group is a key component of organic chemistry and plays a crucial role in the properties and reactivity of many compounds.

When a hydroxyl group is attached to a carbon atom, the resulting molecule is classified as an alcohol. The presence of the -OH group imparts polarity to the molecule due to the electronegativity difference between oxygen and hydrogen, as well as between oxygen and carbon. This polarity allows alcohols to form hydrogen bonds with water and other polar molecules, making them soluble in water and contributing to their relatively high boiling points compared to nonpolar compounds of similar molecular weight.

Hydroxyl groups are also known for their reactivity. The oxygen atom's lone pairs of electrons make it a nucleophilic center, capable of attacking electrophilic sites. Furthermore, the hydrogen atom is weakly acidic and can be removed by a strong base. These properties enable alcohols to undergo a variety of reactions, including oxidation to form aldehydes, ketones, or carboxylic acids, esterification with carboxylic acids, and dehydration to form alkenes. The position and number of hydroxyl groups on a molecule can significantly influence its physical properties, such as solubility and viscosity, and its chemical behavior.
