Hapamuus

Hapamuus is a fictional constructed language created for linguistic experimentation and worldbuilding. It is presented as the centerpiece of the Hapamuus language family, a project initiated by linguist Dr. Liora Kest in the early 2010s. The term hapamuus is used to refer both to the language and to the cohesive set of grammatical principles that define it. The project aims to explore ergative alignment, polysynthetic morphology, and nuanced evidentiality within a comparatively compact phonological system.

The phonology of hapamuus features five vowel phonemes with length contrasts and a consonant inventory that includes p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, and h, plus a glottal stop. Consonant clusters are limited, and syllable structure generally follows a CV or CVC pattern. Stress tends to fall on the penultimate syllable. The writing system, known as the Hapamu script, combines a featural alphabet with diacritic marks to indicate vowel length, tone, and evidentiality. The script is designed to be learnable for beginners while allowing expressive notation for linguistic analysis.

Grammatically, hapamuus is described as an ergative-absolutive language with relatively free word order, though it commonly aligns to a subject–object–verb (SOV) base in simple sentences. Nouns carry case-like markers that signal person, number, and argument role, while verbs display rich morphology to mark subject agreement, object agreement, and evidential stance. Evidential markers distinguish direct, reported, and inferred information, contributing to a layered discourse structure.
