Polysynthetic refers to a typological characteristic of some languages in which words, especially verbs, can encode a large amount of information that would require multiple words in less synthetic languages. In polysynthetic systems, a single verb may incorporate or be affixed with nouns, adjectives, and other lexical material, allowing it to express arguments such as subject and object, as well as tense, aspect, mood, direction, number, and other grammatical or semantic categories within one complex word.

Noun incorporation is a common feature in polysynthetic languages, enabling a verb to include nominal arguments as part of its morphology. This can reduce or alter the need for separate noun phrases in a sentence. Because of these processes, sentences can often be formed by combining relatively few words, with verbs carrying substantial proposition content. The result is a high morpheme-to-root ratio and a strong reliance on bound morphemes to convey meaning.

Polysynthetic languages are often discussed in relation to agglutinative and fusional systems, but the categories are overlapping. A key distinction is the extent to which a single word can encode multiple arguments and functional elements. In practice, many languages show a spectrum, with some highly polysynthetic verbal forms and other more analytic portions of the grammar.

Geographically, polysynthetic languages occur in various regions, with notable examples among Arctic and subarctic languages such as Inuktitut and Greenlandic, and among Indigenous languages of North America, including Mohawk. Some South American languages, including certain Cariban and Tupian languages, also exhibit polysynthetic tendencies. The label reflects a structural tendency rather than a uniform feature across all members of a language family.
