Handmolding

Handmolding is a traditional craft technique used to create functional or decorative objects by shaping clay, plaster, or other moldable materials by hand. The process involves manipulating the material directly without the use of pre-made molds, relying instead on the artisan’s skill to achieve the desired form. This method is commonly employed in pottery, sculpture, and some forms of architectural ornamentation.

The technique is particularly valued for its ability to produce unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Unlike mass-produced items, handmolded objects often feature organic imperfections and subtle variations, reflecting the artisan’s personal touch. Potters, for instance, frequently use handmolding to create vessels such as bowls, vases, or plates by pinching, coiling, or slab-building techniques.
