Handgeprägt

Handgeprägt is a term used in numismatics and metalwork to describe coins, medals, or other objects produced by hand impression rather than by automatic minting presses. The German term emphasizes manual intervention in the stamping process, typically by hammering or using a hand-operated press to imprint the dies onto a planchet. While most modern coins are machine-struck, handgeprägt pieces are associated with artisanal production, historical reproduction, or limited editions that seek to evoke traditional methods.

Historically, handgeprägte coins were common before the development of centralized, industrial presses. Each piece was individually struck, often between a pair of dies with a hammer applied by a craftsman. This method could yield irregularities in centering, edge definition, and relief, contributing to a distinctive, imperfect charm that some collectors value. In contemporary practice, the term is frequently used for limited-run commemoratives, artist’s medals, or reproductions that deliberately imitate historical hammer-struck techniques.

Process and characteristics: a planchet is placed between two dies, and a hammer blow or a hand-operated press impression transfers the design. The result tends to show more variation in strike quality, with possible off-centering, stronger or weaker relief, and more pronounced file marks or irregular edges compared with machine-struck coins.
