Hammaslääkäriasemat, literally “dentist offices,” are the primary points of contact for dental care within the Finnish healthcare system. They encompass a range of outpatient settings where patients receive preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services. The term covers private practices, university clinics, and public sector dental units that are staffed by licensed dentists and supporting personnel such as dental hygienists and assistants.

In the public sector, hammaslääkäriasemat are integrated into the national dental care program, which is funded through municipal budgets and the national social insurance system. Patients typically obtain dental care through a referral system that prioritises those with higher risk of oral diseases or with special needs. The clinics offer routine check‑ups, fillings, root canal therapy, orthodontic evaluations for children and adults, and emergency services. Consequently, national surveys consistently show high levels of dental health awareness and low prevalence of severe dental caries among schoolchildren.
