Halkeil

Halkeil is a town and municipality in the northern part of Eldoria. It lies along the Halkeil River and on the coast facing the North Sea. As of the 2023 census, about 3,100 residents live in the municipality. The town of Halkeil is the administrative center.

Geography and climate: The municipality covers roughly 18 square kilometers of rolling coastal countryside. Inland, gentle hills rise toward a small forest, while marshes dot the river mouth. The climate is temperate maritime, with cool winters and mild summers.

History: Halkeil is first documented in the 14th century as a fishing and trading settlement. It gained town privileges in the 16th century and developed crafts and shipbuilding. The 19th century brought industrialization; modern governance began in the 1860s.

Demographics and society: The population is predominantly Eldorian, with a local Halkeil dialect. The religious landscape includes a historic Lutheran church and a secular community.

Economy: Fishing declined but remains present in the harbor. The economy now includes services, light manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture in surrounding areas, notably dairy and vegetables.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include the ruins of Halkeil Castle, St. Mary's Church (15th century), and the 19th-century Town Hall. The annual Harvest Festival attracts visitors from nearby towns.

Governance and transportation: Halkeil is governed by a municipal council. It is connected by regional roads and bus services; the nearest railway station is in Karstein. A seasonal ferry links to neighboring coastal communities.
