Halbmantelgeschosse

Halbmantelgeschosse, often translated as half-jacketed bullets, are a type of projectile used in firearms. They are characterized by a partial metal jacket that covers the base and sides of the bullet, leaving the nose exposed. This design differs from full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets, which are entirely encased in a metal jacket, and from hollow-point bullets, which have a cavity in the nose.

The exposed nose of a halbmantelgeschoss is designed to deform upon impact with a target. This deformation can lead to increased terminal ballistics compared to FMJ bullets, as it can cause the bullet to expand, creating a larger wound channel. This expansion is generally less pronounced than that of a hollow-point bullet, offering a balance between penetration and expansion.

Halbmantelgeschosse are commonly used in hunting and self-defense applications. For hunting, their expanding properties can contribute to quicker incapacitation of game. In self-defense, the expansion is intended to maximize tissue damage and energy transfer to the target. However, their expanding nature can also lead to greater fragmentation and potential for over-penetration in certain scenarios, which is a consideration for users. The construction involves a lead core that is partially encased in a copper or gilding metal jacket.
