An HVAC unit, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit, is a centralized system that provides space heating, cooling, and air distribution for residential or commercial buildings. It may be a single packaged unit or part of a split system. A typical unit combines a heat source, a cooling mechanism, a ventilation pathway, a blower for moving air, electrical controls, and interconnecting ductwork or piping.

Common configurations include packaged units that contain all components in one cabinet, split systems with an outdoor condenser and indoor air handler, and rooftop units for commercial applications. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling using refrigeration cycles, while furnaces generate heat that is distributed by the same air distribution system. PTACs and window units are small, self-contained alternatives for individual rooms.

Performance is measured by efficiency ratings such as SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), EER (energy efficiency ratio), COP (coefficient of performance), and AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) for heating. Higher values indicate greater efficiency. System performance also depends on proper sizing, installation, and climate. Energy labeling programs, like ENERGY STAR, rate equipment for efficiency and environmental impact. Building design and controls, including programmable thermostats and zoning, influence overall energy use.

Installation requires professional design and commissioning to ensure proper refrigerant charge, duct pressure, airflow, and electrical connections. Regular maintenance—filter replacement, coil cleaning, duct sealing, and refrigerant checks—helps maintain efficiency and indoor air quality. Safety considerations include combustion safety for gas furnaces, electrical protection, and refrigerant handling. Improper installation or leakage can reduce performance and pose health or safety risks.
