HTTPSää is a hypothetical extension to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) that envisions integrating enhanced privacy, user consent signals, and accessibility considerations into secure web communications. The term combines the standard HTTPS with a diacritic-inflected suffix to mark localization and experimental development.

Origin and status: The concept arose in academic and industry discussions in the mid-2020s as a thought experiment to address evolving privacy expectations. It has not been standardized by major bodies such as the IETF or W3C, and no interoperable specification exists at present. In practical terms, HTTPSää remains a theoretical framework used in debates about secure web design.

Design goals and features: Proponents describe three pillars: (1) strengthened user consent mechanics, potentially via in-band signals or client-embedded metadata that accompany requests; (2) stronger identity binding between sites and users through enhanced certificate handling or alternate trust anchors; and (3) improved accessibility support within the TLS handshake and error reporting to aid assistive technologies. The goal is to preserve HTTPS security guarantees while making data-sharing choices more explicit and easier to audit.

Criticism and challenges: Critics warn of added complexity, possible interoperability fragmentation, and performance costs. Achieving broad adoption would require consensus on consent semantics, governance of trust anchors, and alignment with existing standards for privacy, accessibility, and legal compliance.
