The term emerged in the mid-2010s as a shorthand reference to a network of individuals and organizations that promote nationalist sentiments, often with a focus on Hong Kong’s distinct identity separate from both China and the United Kingdom.

The origins of HNCN can be traced back to the 2014 Umbrella Movement, a series of protests advocating for greater democratic reforms in Hong Kong. During and after these demonstrations, online platforms such as forums, social media groups, and messaging apps became key spaces for nationalist discourse. Supporters of HNCN often emphasize Hong Kong’s unique cultural, historical, and political identity, advocating for greater autonomy and resistance against perceived Chinese central government overreach.

Critics argue that HNCN groups sometimes engage in divisive rhetoric, framing Hong Kong’s identity as inherently opposed to Chinese sovereignty.
