HIDvalaistus, commonly known as High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting, refers to a type of electrical gas discharge lamp that produces light by creating an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed within a translucent or transparent arc tube. This method of illumination is known for its high luminous efficiency and intense brightness, making it popular in automotive headlights, large outdoor lighting, and industrial applications.

There are several common types of HID lamps, including metal halide, high-pressure sodium, and mercury vapor lamps. Metal halide lamps offer a broad spectrum of light, closely resembling natural daylight, and are often used in stadiums and retail lighting. High-pressure sodium lamps emit a warm, yellow-orange light and are favored for street lighting due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan. Mercury vapor lamps produce a bluish-white light, primarily utilized in industrial settings.

HID lighting systems typically require ballasts to regulate the current flowing through the lamp, ensuring stable operation and prolonging lifespan.
