HFSjärjestelmän

HFSjärjestelmän, also known as Hierarchical File System, was a file system developed by Apple Computer for their Macintosh operating system. It was first introduced with the Macintosh operating system 0.97 in 1985 and remained the primary file system for macOS until it was replaced by HFS Plus in 1998.

HFSjärjestelmän introduced a hierarchical structure for organizing files and directories, a significant improvement over the flatter file systems of the time. This allowed for better organization and management of data on storage devices. It supported file and folder names up to 255 characters and could store metadata associated with files, such as creation dates and comments.

A key feature of HFSjärjestelmän was its support for resource forks and data forks. The data fork contained the actual content of a file, while the resource fork held metadata, icons, and other application-specific resources. This dual-fork structure was unique to Macintosh files and allowed for greater flexibility in how applications managed their data and associated information.

Despite its advancements, HFSjärjestelmän had limitations. It was not designed for very large storage devices and could suffer from fragmentation, which could slow down disk access. Its 16-bit file allocation table also limited the number of files that could be stored efficiently. These limitations led to the development of its successor, HFS Plus (also known as HFS+), which addressed many of these issues.
